During the Tajik Civil War (1992-1997), the Bartang Valley had better grain supplies than any other valley in the region. According to experts, the secret lies in the fact that the people of this valley have been able to preserve local wheat seeds for many years, thanks largely to their traditional Indigenous knowledge.
The main objective in this project was to establish a direct connection between plants and human cultures in the highlands of the Pamirs. The significant role of wild genetic diversity in advancing crop improvement and enhancing resilience to environmental degradation and diseases was identified and thoroughly examined within the framework of the project outlined in detail in this report.
The Bartang Valley “wheat park,” seed banks, storage techniques, farming initiatives, and regenerative land practices presented here, which serves as the foundation of the work our partners carry forward today, is presented below alongside beautiful photos of the people, the region, and their work for the Earth.
